Weather conditions can breed crop disease

One of the toughest challenges for farmers to deal with is crop disease. Weather conditions can breed harmful bacteria and viruses in different kinds of crops, and if these things aren't carefully watched, it can ruin a farmer's harvest.

According to Farm & Ranch Guide, many farmers in North and South Dakota had to deal with a disease called wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) this season. The virus is characterized by a yellow and brown streak on the crop, and can quickly ruin a significant portion if not carefully managed.

"WSMV came early probably because volunteers and weeds were not controlled in fall 2010," said Marcia McMullen, an entomologist at North Dakota State University. The disease resulted in an 8-16 percent yield loss in winter wheat and a 28-50 percent yield loss in spring wheat for 2011.

When it does come time to harvest, farmers will need the tools to get the job done right. One way to maximize profit is through reducing costs by buying used agricultural equipment. The auction site IronPlanet offers a wide selection of equipment of all types and prices. Many of the listings are backed by IronClad Assurance, which allows the buyer to see a point-by-point inspection of the equipment before they buy, ensuring that they know exactly what they're getting.
