National Safe Driving Week applies to heavy machinery operators as well

This year, June 24-30 is National Safe Driving Week, and awareness events will be held throughout the country to help ensure people are safe on the road. However, those who operate heavy machinery have a responsibility to stay safe as well.

Much of the week will be focused on new technology, such as cell phones and tablet computers, which can distract a user while driving. The problem is especially prevalent among teens getting behind the wheel. Those operating heavy machinery must be sure not get careless as well, according to Kubota Tractor Corporation. Kubota refers to these devices as "tractor distractors," and says all who are qualified to be behind the controls of agricultural equipment need to be distraction-free.

"The best advice for operators is to stay focused to stay safe," says Greg Embury, vice president of sales and marketing for Kubota. "National Safety Month, and particularly safe driving week, provides us with an important reminder to pay close attention to the task at hand, avoid all distractions, and to take note of all safety practices before using tractors, lawn and garden equipment, construction equipment and utility vehicles."

Kubota offers additional safety tips for those getting behind the wheel of heavy machinery. Tractor drivers should always use their roll-over protective structures (ROPS) and seatbelts when the vehicle is in motion. Never jump off of a moving tractor or leave the engine running. It's also important to keep children away from all heavy machinery.

Staying safe behind the controls is only half the battle - operators must also ensure their equipment is reliable. The online auction site IronPlanet offers agricultural and construction equipment of just about every type. What's more, all equipment is backed by IronClad Assurance inspection reports, so buyers know exactly what they're getting.
