February is National African American History Month, so it's only fitting that work on a Museum of African American History and Culture recently begun in Washington D.C.

The project has been in the planning stages for years, and construction crews recently broke ground on the new site. President Barack Obama was in attendance along with several other dignitaries, including former First Lady Laura Bush.

"When future generations hear these songs of pain and progress and struggle and sacrifice I hope they will not think of them as somehow separate from the larger American story," said President Obama. "I want them to see it as a central and important part of our shared story - a call to see ourselves in one another."

The $500 million project is scheduled to be completed by 2015. It's expected to attract more than 3 million visitors annually and will feature more than 20,000 cultural artifacts.
