The Discovery Channel has become known for a range of shows that shine a spotlight on jobs that people may not know much about, such as The Deadliest Catch or World's Toughest Trucker. Their latest series, Machines of Glory, hopes to do the same for the construction industry.

The show uses a competition format that will pit construction crews against each other as they use various forms of heavy machinery. Teams will be asked to complete skill challenges using backhoes, excavators, cranes, skid steers, wheel loaders and dozens of other pieces of construction equipment. Each challenge is focused on utilizing the equipment in a unique way that demonstrates the operator's skill with the vehicle.

Each episode will highlight three different pieces of construction equipment, and then explain how they are used in day-to-day work. The first three rounds will each feature one of these pieces of equipment, and all three teams on the show will compete. The fourth round will combine all of the equipment into one challenge, with the two teams that are ahead on points competing for the grand prize of $12,000.

The show is slated to premiere on Discovery Channel in the near future, though the network hasn't revealed the exact date yet.

While the show should be interesting for those in the construction industry, contractors know that equipment is extremely important to getting their work done. Those interested in purchasing used construction equipment should shop through the auction site IronPlanet.
