Cities with major construction projects underway

As a result of the economic downturn, the construction industry took a hit across the country. Fortunately, things are beginning to turn around in major cities, with more projects available for contractors and construction jobs slowly on the rise.

Forbes recently took a look at the cities that had major construction underway, organizing them into a list based on the total amount of money spent on projects that have broken ground. Various types of construction were included, but the list left off "public works" such as bridges and parks.

Unsurprisingly, New York City was at the top of the list. Although that may be because of the city's large population, the fact is that no other city comes close to the $17.2 billion being spent this year on construction. In fact, the second-place city, Dallas, is only spending $9.5 billion. Things look good for Texas in general, as Houston was close in third place with $8.5 billion. Chicago and Washington, D.C., rounded out the top 5.

No matter where a construction company is located, owners need to be ready for any projects coming down the pipeline. The online auction site IronPlanet is a good way to purchase used equipment that may be necessary for these jobs. The site's IronClad Assurance allows contractors to view full inspection reports before they bid, ensuring they know exactly what they're getting.
