Ford is constructing a major upgrade to its factory in Claycomo, Mo., and subcontractors in the area are reaping the benefits, reports The Kansas City Star.

As part of an agreement between the American automaker and the United Auto Workers, Ford is investing $1.1 billion in the facility over the next few years. Right now, that means the construction of a $200 million stamping plant facility, which will be able to stamp 900 body parts per minute for the new Transit delivery van that will be assembled there. The 420,000-square-foot complex is currently employing 105 construction workers from the local area and will eventually allow Ford to make more parts on-site.

Although the general contractor is based in Detroit, construction companies in the Kansas City area are getting quite a lot of work, according to the news source.

"I've heard it's been very good from the subcontractors' standpoint because they've been working quite a few hours," Brad Miller, president of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Subcontractors Association, told the news source. "It's also good because it's one of the few jobs that aren't public."

Subcontractors working on a major project such as this will need all the equipment to get the job done, including heavy-duty cranes. The online auction site IronPlanet offers a broad range previously owned equipment, and is often more affordable than buying new.
