If you’re jonesing to bring home a big, bold, beautiful military Humvee to join your family of vehicles, GovPlanet is the place to go for your purchase. Beginning in December of 2014, IronPlanet has made it easy to find, compare and bid on government surplus Humvees from the Defense Logistics Agency.

GovPlanet has weekly auctions, and there’s a particularly big Humvee sale coming up on June 24. Here’s what to expect when you begin your journey to ownership of a government surplus Humvee through GovPlanet:

  • Explore available vehicles on GovPlanet.com. You’ll be able to see photos, starting bids, guaranteed inspection reports giving you detailed information on each vehicle, and more. We have a Watch List tool as well as a Saved Searches feature; use both to manage your search and flag vehicles you’re interested in. Some items have Priority Bid functionality, so even before a GovPlanet auction day, you may be able to place a bid and get a head start on other buyers.
  • These Humvees are for off-road use only. That means you won’t be able to legally drive them on streets or highways. When you make your purchase, you’ll need to arrange for transportation from the seller’s site to your home or storage site. (We make that easy through our partnership with VeriTread.) You’ll also need to sign a release form (a Hold Harmless Agreement) to clear IronPlanet of any liability, and go through an end-user certification process with the U.S. government.
  • Starting bids are usually between $5,000 and $8,000. At the first auction, vehicles had an average final sales price of about $30,000. We recommend getting any financing arrangements set up before auction day (we have three preferred partners who can take care of this for you—more info here).
  • Buying from outside the country? Due to government restrictions, you’ll need to work with a U.S. citizen to purchase these vehicles. You may also need to set your GovPlanet.com location to inside the U.S. to even see restricted vehicles for sale.
