"One of South Korea’s top shipping companies is begging for itslife. Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., which along with the larger Hanjin Shipping Co. handles most of Korea’s exports, asked owners of its chartered fleet to cut a break on rates, the WSJ’s Costas Paris reports. Creditors reportedly want the company to reduce its more than $1.5 billion in charter costs by 30% before agreeing to debt restructuring. The sources of HMM’s distress are familiar: not enough demand, and too many ships on the water. That HMM says it needs such a deep reduction in charter rates just to stay in business is a sign that the company expects the shipping industry’s woes to be deep and long-lasting." Read more
