Time to Sell? Don't Stress - Use IronPlanet Technology

Posted by IronPlanet on Oct 4, 2016 5:26:00 PM

So you're thinking of selling the old Cat crawler tractor. You could take pictures, email all the people you know, put an ad in the paper and online, field phone calls, be available to show it, negotiate a deal, then hang around the day the truck is supposed to come and take it away.

Or, with one call, you could use the power of technology to gain top dollar for your item. Just tell the people at IronPlanet that you're ready to sell, then let the professionals take care of all the details for you, from evaluating and photographing the item to spreading the word far and wide via our extensive email lists and the interwebs.

IronPlanet will be in Kissimmee, Florida from February 13-17, 2017, and we are animals when it comes to selling your equipment for the highest price. Last year's event broke records:

  • More than 1,100 registered bidders onsite;
  • Online attendees topped 100,000 people from 175 countries;
  • Equipment received bids from buyers in 48 countries;
  • More than 2,350 items sold for $93.8 million in gross merchandise volume.

All you need to do is give us a call to get the ball rolling. Operators are standing by.

Red pins indicate bidders, blue pins indicate winning bidders in IronPlanet's September auctions.

Canadian Perspectives:BC General Contracting Benefits from Finning's One-Two Punch

Posted by IronPlanet on Aug 19, 2016 11:00:00 AM

Kelowna-based company disposes of older units through auction, adds new machines.

For BC General Contracting Inc. business is brisk, despite the season’s slow start due to an unhurried municipal approvals process.

The award-winning Westbank, a BC-based company which focuses primarily on subdivision prep work, is now booked steadily until next summer.

With a strong book of business ahead, BCGC owners Beau and Cain Derickson figured it was time to modernize their fleet. “We wanted to do a full changeover of our equipment that was houred up,” said Beau from his office near Kelowna, in the province’s interior. “They weren’t in bad shape, it’s just that we were looking at a pretty big maintenance bill and we couldn’t risk any downtime.” This kind of advance planning helped BCGC win a BC Achievement Foundation Award as business of the year in 2009.

For help with the transition to newer iron, the Dericksons looked to Finning Canada, the local Caterpillar dealer, which offered the range of new machines BCGC was looking for. An added bonus was the ability to dispose of older iron through Finning’s new auction sales channel, unveiled about a year ago.

Finning-hosted Cat Auction Services events feature more than just Cat equipment

It was August last year when the world’s largest Caterpillar dealer, Finning, agreed to jointly market used heavy equipment in western Canada through Cat Auction Services, IronPlanet’s unreserved auction marketplace. The move enabled Finning to offer its customers an auction alternative they can count on. It also connects western Canadian equipment owners with IronPlanet’s 1.5 million registered online users around the globe.

Canadian Perspectives: Kelowna Customer Benefits from New Auction Alternative

Posted by IronPlanet on Jul 25, 2016 7:00:00 AM

Saves on transport costs, achieves better than expected returns

 Canada’s new, used equipment auction alternative is rapidly building a following. That’s what Finning equipment salesperson Norm Roine from Vernon will tell you.

After advising one of his customers he had something up his sleeve that could help them with their plans to restructure their fleet, he was met with, “Who the hell is IronPlanet?”  That understandable blind spot was quickly resolved and the newly enlightened owners of a mid-sized Kelowna-based construction firm ended up disposing of 14 units through the new auction channel and adding eight new Cat machines from Finning.

Canadian Perspectives: Glimmer of Light at the End of Alberta's Economic Tunnel?

Posted by IronPlanet on Jul 7, 2016 2:17:07 PM

Heavy equipment owners look to restructure as downturn continues.

ATB Financial, the largest Alberta-based financial institution, states in a report released July 4 that there’s “a glimmer of light” at the end of the province’s darkened economic tunnel.

That conclusion is based on an Ipsos online survey of 1,007 respondents conducted in April. But it’s a minuscule glimmer, some would argue.

Just five percent of those surveyed viewed Alberta’s economy as much better than it was six months ago, but that’s a three percent increase which ends a downward slide of opinion that began in the fall of 2015. Still, 44 percent view the economy as much worse than it was six months ago, down from 47 percent in Q1 2016. Glimmer indeed!

ATB’s survey report also outlines the huge impact the downturn has had, finding that 55 percent of Calgarians and 53 percent of Edmontonians claimed to be significantly impacted by the drop in oil prices, a higher rate than in other parts of Alberta.

Province-wide, 49 percent of Albertans say they’ve been impacted by the slump in oil and natural gas prices which have plummeted more than 50 percent since late 2014. A whopping 30 percent of survey respondents said they’d lost their jobs as a result.

Canadian Perspectives: Building Trust in Canada's Used Equipment Central

Posted by IronPlanet on Jun 20, 2016 7:21:19 PM

Edmonton Journal reporter Gordon Kent recently identified Alberta’s capital as “one of the world’s biggest centres for industrial equipment auctions.”

As you deal with narrow margins that accompany a sputtering Alberta economy, you can’t afford to take chances on used iron that might not be up to the task; instead, you want the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re buying an asset you can rely on.

Stony Plain-based industry veteran Ken Shultis agrees. From his perspective, buying used equipment from anyone is a matter of trust. “It’s the biggest thing in the industry,” says the president of the appropriately named, Integrity Trading and Consulting, a company that purchases and sells used construction machinery and parts globally. “If you can’t trust your supplier, don’t deal with them.”
