Military Turns to Online Auctions to Unload Unwanted Gear

By Sandra I. Erwin

Nineties-era Humvees can be had for $7,000. Dump trucks and tractors that once trudged through warzones start at $15,000. And construction cranes that helped build military outposts bear price tags from $20,000 to $23,000. Most are in good working order and many of the trucks have surprisingly low mileage.

These are some of the 1,300 pieces of surplus military hardware that will be up for auction September 7. “Every Wednesday we sell 350 to 400 items,” says Jeffrey L. Holmes, senior vice president of government solutions and auction management at GovPlanet.

Data – The New Fuel for your Business

Posted by IronPlanet on Sep 4, 2016 4:30:00 PM

My name is Matt Ackley and I am the new CMO at IronPlanet.  I have been in the role for about three months now and the experience has been amazing.  As someone who has 12 years of online auctions on their resume (eight of them at eBay) and another couple of years at Google, it’s great to see online technology really start to have an impact on the heavy equipment industry. In these roles, I had the wonderful opportunity to help pioneer the use of data on both the seller side and buyer side of an online marketplace. Whether it was helping sellers with auction strategy or driving demand to the various eBay categories, data proved to be the lifeblood of our day to day work.  This only accelerated during my time at Google.

At IronPlanet, we are incredibly excited to drive this transformation in the heavy equipment industry. It’s why I joined. This is the first in a series of posts, where I hope to update you on how we are using data to build a more efficient marketplace - a global marketplace that enables buyers to get the equipment they need and sellers to realize the most optimal price for that equipment.

Auctioneering: a One-on-One Conversation with 1,000 People

Posted by IronPlanet on Sep 3, 2016 2:20:00 PM

Listening to an auctioneer do his or her thing is as much fun as bidding. The patter (or chant,  in auctioneer lingo) entices buyers into a game of call-and-response, the speed creates excitement.

So how great is it that IronPlanet has both heavy equipment and talented auctioneers who make selling it an art form?

A lifetime in the business has given Dustin Rogers, lead auctioneer for Cat Auction Services, knowledge in every corner of auctioneering. He's sensitive to circumstances surrounding the sale, can spot a cautious bidder from 20 paces, and knows how to use technology to generate sales. A third generation auctioneer, he learned and shaped his chant by listening to his grandfather, father, and other callers since he was old enough to help out around the event.

Listening shaped his style; practice made him fast. Like zero-to-90 fast. Dustin has won trophies as First Runner-Up in the Men's International Auctioneer Champion competition for the past two years in a row.

What bidders see at auction is the product of a ton of work that took place leading up to the marquee event. For weeks before, there are client meetings, contract writing, marketing, venue setup and good old schlepping. Dustin spoke (at regular speed) about his experience in auctioneering and what it takes to make a great auction company.

Quick, I Need a Sky Hook

Posted by IronPlanet on Sep 2, 2016 10:00:00 AM

Go on - admit it. Way back in the beginning of your career, you were sent to fetch a board stretcher. Or spots for the spot welder.

The snipe hunt has provided laughs in every profession that's been around long enough to have an old-timer and a newbie. Computer nerds tell younger geeks to fetch a length of W-LAN cable. Metric hammers and lef-handed wrenches are hiding at every construction site. Chopping flour doesn't break up gluten, and if you're in the body shop and somebody tells you to find the blinker fluid . . . well, consider yourself warned.

This guy really put some thought into his version of the snipe hunt.

The September 8 Auction Paves the Way for Great Buys

Posted by IronPlanet on Aug 31, 2016 8:00:00 PM

Before beautiful paved highways made people fall in love with roads and road trips, the checklist for intrepid travelers with a jones for adventure included: ropes, blocks and tackle, axes, sleeping bags, water bags, spades, camps stoves, compasses, barometers, thermometers, cyclometers, first aid kits, rubber ponchos, tire chains, pith helmets, assorted spare parts, and firearms.

Good times.

All that changed after WWII, when iron and labor could once again be put to use building our country's infrastructure. And with that the highway system was born, along with diners, souvenir stands, and those irresistible teepees.

IronPlanet's September 8 auction features miles of deals offered by Oldcastle/Staker Parsons & LS Jensen. Check out this 2005 Vermeer T-955 Trencher, this 2006 Komatsu D155AX-6 Crawler Tractor, this 2002 Cat 320CLU Track Excavator, this 2004 Kenworth T800B Five-Axle Dump Truck, and more equipment that builds the smooth, scenic roads we love to drive.
