Canadian Perspectives: Glimmer of Light at the End of Alberta's Economic Tunnel?

Posted by IronPlanet on Jul 7, 2016 2:17:07 PM

Heavy equipment owners look to restructure as downturn continues.

ATB Financial, the largest Alberta-based financial institution, states in a report released July 4 that there’s “a glimmer of light” at the end of the province’s darkened economic tunnel.

That conclusion is based on an Ipsos online survey of 1,007 respondents conducted in April. But it’s a minuscule glimmer, some would argue.

Just five percent of those surveyed viewed Alberta’s economy as much better than it was six months ago, but that’s a three percent increase which ends a downward slide of opinion that began in the fall of 2015. Still, 44 percent view the economy as much worse than it was six months ago, down from 47 percent in Q1 2016. Glimmer indeed!

ATB’s survey report also outlines the huge impact the downturn has had, finding that 55 percent of Calgarians and 53 percent of Edmontonians claimed to be significantly impacted by the drop in oil prices, a higher rate than in other parts of Alberta.

Province-wide, 49 percent of Albertans say they’ve been impacted by the slump in oil and natural gas prices which have plummeted more than 50 percent since late 2014. A whopping 30 percent of survey respondents said they’d lost their jobs as a result.

Looking to Sell your Equipment? 4 Essential Steps

Posted by IronPlanet on Jul 6, 2016 3:27:43 PM

Do you know the worth of your underutilized or aging heavy equipment? Your machines are probably more valuable than you think, especially if you’ve kept the items in good working condition. There are plenty of eager buyers around the world who are willing to take used equipment off your hands. But before you put equipment up for sale, there are four important steps to take in order to maximize an item’s resale value and get the most out of the sale of your used equipment.

1. Maintain your equipment

Basic maintenance can make a big difference in the quality of your equipment and its resale value. If an item is in poor condition, the pool of buyers interested will be significantly smaller than if the machine has been taken care of properly.

Owners that implement a preventative maintenance program immediately after purchasing equipment ensure that items stay in the best possible condition over time and can then offer buyers reliable machines. Basic maintenance can prevent the failure of major equipment parts, especially hydraulic components. Hydraulic cylinders can leak oil or other pressurized fluids if bushings or seals rot, wear or crack.

A preventative maintenance program should focus on:

  • Repairing mechanical, structural and cosmetic issues as they arise
  • Keeping engines well-oiled and hydraulic fluid at proper levels, and changing fluids as per manufacturer recommendations
  • Replacing parts that have visible corrosion or damage, such as rusting hardware and broken windows
  • Recapping or replacing tattered tires at the first signs of wear
  • Keeping a schedule and record of all equipment services

Check out some interesting global headlines around the construction and heavy equipment industry as we close out the month of June.

Auctioneering Industry Thrives in Oil Downturn (Houston Chronicle)

"As the auctioneer's megaphone faded off in the distance, Cody Baker and Matthew Boykin had wandered far out to the edge of a 130-acre gravel lot to check out a row of man-lifts, the crawlers with big arms that elevate workers to high places. They hoisted hoods in the hot sun, poked at wiring, peered underneath to check for oil leaks, trying to find a few worth taking back to Midland to put to work in the oil fields." Read more

Need an Excavator This Summer? Tips to Choosing the Right Equipment

Posted by IronPlanet on Jun 30, 2016 9:49:21 AM

Now that summer is here, the excavator becomes essential for many jobs sites, big and small. But, how do you know what type of equipment you need? Should you consider an attachment instead? Whether it’s job needs, weight or resale value, there are many things to consider when purchasing a used piece of heavy equipment. Taking the time to learn about different choices will help you select the right machine for your job. Here are a few tips to choosing the right excavator to help with your summer project and beyond.

Job requirements

First determine what work the excavator will be required to accomplish your job sites. Excavators are available in a number of different sizes. Mini-excavators are often used within buildings because they fit inside easily and can be used for interior demolition or in tight spaces between buildings. However, they aren’t capable of carrying heavier loads. For organizations doing water and sewer work, it’s essential an excavator be able to lift heavy concrete structures and dig within certain depths. For contractors working alongside highways, the excavator may need to have a zero tail swing or zero radius so that it can be operated without swinging into oncoming traffic.
