IronPlanet®, an online marketplace for buying and selling used heavy equipment, today announced it has surpassed 1 million users who have registered to view equipment for sale and participate in online auctions at IronPlanet.com (see infographic here).

Founded in 1999, IronPlanet held its first auction March 23, 2000. By September 2009, the marketplace had attracted half a million users. Demonstrating the strong global interest in the IronPlanet online model as a tool for buying and selling, it took just over four years to add another 500,000 users. Today, IronPlanet has registered users in nearly every country and has sold more than $3.5 billion of used heavy equipment.

According to a 2013 survey by the Pew Research Center, 92 percent of Americans 30 to 49 years old and 83 percent of 50 to 64 year old adults are Internet users. And today, many people are discovering the convenience and efficiency that online equipment auctions provide.

Online equipment auctions allow sellers to get their idle or underutilized equipment in front of a global audience. And buyers can choose from a wide selection of items for construction, mining, oil and gas and agriculture without leaving the comfort of their office or home.

IronPlanet® kicked off 2014 strong, selling $26.8 million in used heavy equipment and trucks during a four-day global auction event held Jan. 28-31.

The four-day auction included equipment listed in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Europe. In total, 1,795 items were sold to over 1,000 buyers. Strong demand in the market was demonstrated by online bids placed from 78 different countries as well as from every U.S. state and all 10 Canadian provinces.

Our online marketplace helps equipment owners efficiently and conveniently acquire what they need. For Canadian businesses involved in the oil and gas industry, 2014 has the potential to be an active year., meaning a variety of equipment will be in demand.
