THE FEDS ARE HAVING A FIRE SALE ON DECOMMISSIONED HUMVEES

Prices start as low as $4,000. Translation: Dude, hurry

BY EVAN BLEIER

The US federal government (bless their cold, calculated, bureaucratic hearts) get many, many, many decisions dead wrong.

But selling off the DOD’s excess supply of Humvees for pennies on the dollar isn’t one of them.

The Humvees — which cost the government more than $220,000 on average — have been "completely demilitarized," come with no title, and are officially being sold for “off-road use only." That’s obviously a big drawback, but the price (as low a $4,000 in some cases) is definitely right on point.

Ritchie, IronPlanet CEOs Discuss Recent Acquisition

Ravi Saligram, CEO of Ritchie Bros., and Gregory J. Owens, chairman and CEO of IronPlanet, spoke to Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) about what the future holds.

Despite early indications that IronPlanet was to eventually go public, the company decided that the Ritchie Bros. plan was more desirable and a better investment for IronPlanet investors.

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Incorporated and IronPlanet have jointly announced that they have entered into an agreement under which Ritchie Bros. will acquire IronPlanet for approximately $758.5 million, subject to customary closing adjustments. The deal is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2017.

Following the announcement, Ravi Saligram, CEO of Ritchie Bros., and Gregory J. Owens, chairman and CEO of IronPlanet, spoke to Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) about what the future holds.

Now's Your Chance to Buy a Real Humvee From Uncle Sam

You'll need a bigger garage.

By Timothy Dahl

As the military phases out the iconic Humvee, it is left with a surplus of these go-anywhere four-wheel drive vehicles that have been the backbone of the U.S. infantry for more than 30 years. Before this year they've been tough to come by for civilians. But now's your chance to own your own personal Humvee straight from Uncle Sam.

To buy a Humvee you need to start by visiting Gov Planet. It is the official website that has the authority to auction the Humvee and various other military vehicles. The bid process is straightforward, and auctions start at $4,000 for stripped down Humvees to $35,000 for fully operational badass trucks. You'll be required to get an "End Use Certificate" that states you will not take the vehicle overseas.

Is It Time to Upgrade to Tier 4 Final Technology?

By Sue McGregor, Managing Director of Canada, IronPlanet

Equipment manufacturers have seen less than an enthusiastic response to machines equipped with engines that meet Tier 4 emissions requirements, but that’s about to change.

A recent EquipmentWatch report states that the rate of Tier 4 adoption has been “slow at best," with 40% of contractors surveyed indicating that Tier 4 machines currently comprise less than 20% of their fleets.

Canadian Perspectives: Winter Wisdom from Canada’s Cold Weather King

Finning’s Spencer Smirl discusses the daily disciplines that protect your equipment investment.

By Jeff Howard for IronPlanet

It may seem early in the season, but as hearty Canadians head into the challenging winter season ahead, they’ll be looking to fine tune equipment fleets. On Wednesday, September 21, Edmonton will welcome IronPlanet’s 1.5 million registered bidders to an online only auction. Register to bid and check out more than 500 items online or at our Acheson, Alberta yard today!

The Canadian Farmer’s Almanac predicts “downright frigid” winter weather over parts of the Rockies, Prairies, Great Lakes, Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. What else is new?

But for Canadian equipment owners, the Almanac’s August forecast means it’s time to prepare for that winter state of mind. To get a few heavy equipment winter operation reminders, we turned to Spencer Smirl, (pictured above on the right), Finning Canada’s fleet manager for the Site C Clean Energy project near Fort St. John, B.C.

Why Spencer? Well, he just happens to be Canada’s foremost cold weather equipment specialist, a reputation that’s well earned. Over the last five years, he’s kept machines going at both Poles — as a heavy duty mechanic at Finning’s Ekati operation near the Arctic Circle and during “The Coldest Journey”, the first ever attempt to cross the Antarctic in winter. As the lead mechanic for the expedition, Spencer successfully kept two D6Ns chugging in temperatures that reached minus-100 Celsius (that’s minus-148 Fahrenheit for you “southerners”).

IronPlanet intros LiveStream online bidding for on-site auctions

To complement on-site auctions the company added through a merger with Cat Auction Services last year, online equipment auctioneer IronPlanet is introducing what it calls LiveStream bidding.

The feature allows bidders to log into IronPlanet and bid alongside on-site auction customers in real time. The announcement comes just more than a week after Ritchie Bros announced that it will acquire IronPlanet for $758.5 million. Ritchie Bros. has allowed live online bidding at its on-site auctions for some time.

Military Turns to Online Auctions to Unload Unwanted Gear

By Sandra I. Erwin

Nineties-era Humvees can be had for $7,000. Dump trucks and tractors that once trudged through warzones start at $15,000. And construction cranes that helped build military outposts bear price tags from $20,000 to $23,000. Most are in good working order and many of the trucks have surprisingly low mileage.

These are some of the 1,300 pieces of surplus military hardware that will be up for auction September 7. “Every Wednesday we sell 350 to 400 items,” says Jeffrey L. Holmes, senior vice president of government solutions and auction management at GovPlanet.
